Akshaya Tritiya also known as Akha Teej or Akti is reckoned as the most auspicious day in the Hindu calendar. Celebrated by Hindus and Jains, this festival falls on the third day of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu calendar of Vaishakha month.
Akshaya Tritiya is one among four Tithis on which one doesn’t even need to look at muhurta, hence Hindus prefer keeping important events such as weddings, new business ventures, and construction work on this day. A ritual bath in river Ganga and offering barley in the sacred fire are other important rituals that are followed on this day. It is said that on this day both moon and sun remain at their best planetary positions.
History behind celebration of Akshaya Tritiya
According to Hindu mythology and ancient scriptures, Akshaya Tritiya marks many important events.
- Lord Ganesha and Ved Vyasa started writing the epic Mahabharata on this day.
- This day is also celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
- On this day, Goddess Annapurna was born.
- On this day, Lord Krishna bestowed wealth and monetary gains on his poor friend Sudama who had come to his rescue for help.
- According to the Mahabharata, on this day Lord Surya (the Sun God) presented the ‘Akshaya Patra’ to the Pandavas during their exile. He blessed them with the bowl that would continue to produce unlimited amount of food which would never leave them hungry.
- On this day, the river Ganga descended from the heaven on earth.
- It is on this day that Kubera worshipped Goddess Lakshmi and thus was assigned the job of being the treasurer of Gods.
- On this day, Maa Durga won the battle against Mahishasur.
- In Jainism, this festival pays homage to their first monk – Rishabhdev who ended his one-year asceticism by drinking sugarcane juice. It is therefore also called ‘Varsi Tapa’.
This day is highly auspicious for those who buy gold and silver. buy rice, deposit money in a bank account, buy any kind of new things or vessels visiting famous temples, donating foods or special offer for poor peoples, or helping poor children for their education fees, all are good signs for Akshaya Tritiya.
